What goes into Cub’s showreel

Putting together a showreel sounds simple - pick your best shots, add some music, done. In reality it's one of the most agonising edit sessions of the year. After over a decade of work across sports, brands, broadcasters, comedy and storytelling, we have considerably more material than we have showreel. Every shot earns its place on merit - does it show something technically impressive, visually distinctive, or just genuinely make us smile? If it doesn't do at least one of those three things, it's out.

The projects you don't see

A significant chunk of Cub's best work will never appear in a showreel. A number of our projects are protected under NDA - particularly work for major sports organisations, and tech companies who prefer to keep their production partners confidential. Beyond that, over the years we've produced a huge body of work in icon design, branding, Lottie and Rive animation, sticker packs, emoji sets and UX motion design that simply doesn't translate to a traditional showreel format. It's some of our most technically intricate work - just not the kind you can cut to a music track against our traditional animation work and call a highlight reel.

Choosing the music

Currently the music is by Bessa

The music in a showreel does more work than most people realise. It's not wallpaper, it's a statement about who you are and who you want to work with next. For Cub, the track has to feel current without being trend-chasing, energetic without being frantic, and distinctive enough that you'd recognise it as ours rather than lifted from a generic stock library. It needs to represent not just the work we've made but the work we want to make, a subtle but deliberate signal to the kind of creative directors and brands we're most excited to collaborate with.

The edit is built around the music as much as the other way around. Cuts land on beats, transitions breathe with the track, and the energy of the reel rises and falls with the dynamics of the song. Get the music wrong and even the best animation looks ordinary. Get it right and shots you've seen a hundred times in the edit suddenly feel like they belong somewhere else entirely. We spend an embarrassing amount of time on this. We have no regrets. We hope you love it!
